    Rescue Dog Max 180 Transition

Sent Max home today with his new handler. I admittedly got a little attached to this guy while he was in for rehab and training :) cut a little sequence showing his progression while here at RYP. Max came from Montana GermanShepherd BelgianMalinois Rescue. The past history of this 5 year old GSD was relatively unknown but he could not be approached by strangers and had a track record of being tranquilized for vet visits and transport between rescues. This was a dog that had Z

RYP ROLL CALL : Blizzard Brigade

RYP Roll Call : Blizzard Brigade Seems winter really wants to hang out for awhile this year. 3 degrees, strong winds, heavy snow...The yurt dojo is toasty and inviting for training...the kennel is warm and dry...all the space between the 2 is a bit of a cold treacherous nightmare right now haha. Doesn't stop this crew from putting in the reps: REX (GSD) : Rex is in from Montana GermanShepherd BelgianMalinois Rescue. He is being tuned up for adoption. He is a really nice d

    RYP ROLL CALL 02/06/19

RYP ROLL CALL Some new faces around the prop this week kicking off their obedience/rehabilitation programs. If this steady cold and snow continues I may be training ALL of them to collect firewood and pull a dogsled... ZOEY (Shepherd X): Zoey made the trip down from Kalispell for her foundational obedience program. As you can tell from her 'blue steel' focus look she digs the work and is rapidly excelling with her skills. BASIL (Hound X): Big boy Basil is starting his foundat

A Barking Shepherd at 4am = a Buffoon In His Underwear with a Loaded Gun

I have lived with Shepherds pretty much my whole life. I just love their style. They are easy to train, loyal and they come equipped with a built in security system. I have spent many nights sleeping soundly in the backcountry with my dogs knowing that if I NEEDED to be awake - they would sound the alarm. At 4am on June 29th 2017 that particular security system was tested... June 29th, 2017 was an important day for a lot of reasons. It was my wife's birthday. It was also her

RUFF - FUR - ALL Program!

RYP is excited to announce the new RUFF - FUR - ALL program...(that's "referral" for those that don't speak pun). Here is how it works: If you complete a RYP foundational stay-and-train immersion obedience program (typically 2-4 weeks...see more about that program here) and later tell a friend...then THEY book a foundational stay-and-train immersion obedience program...then YOU get a FREE private lesson! Whoa a FREE lesson!? What can I do with that? Well... Wanna brush up on

    NEW FACILITY and LOCATION!

NEW TRAINING DIGS! RYP is excited to announce our new location and training facility! We needed room to expand so we jumped across the valley and over the river landing in a beautiful location that boasts a temperature controlled facility, fenced in acreage and a 'backyard' that includes miles of prime Montana backcountry...a lovely stage for working K9s... Tomorrow the doors officially open and the roster is stacked with a full house of K9s in for different levels of trainin

    Sit. Stay. Save my ass.

It’s past midnight in a torrential downpour. We were alone somewhere above 12,000 feet in the backcountry of Colorado. I was soaked, scared, freezing and lost…That’s when Schuck Handsome saved my ass… Anyone that has ventured into a conversation with me about dogs and training knows that I hold a canine’s perceptive ability to a high regard. Arrogance often leaves humans wondering ‘why that dog cannot learn…’ when the truth is, more often than not, that we are just failing to
The WORST part about being a dog trainer...Puppies.

The WORST part about being a dog trainer...Puppies.

Puppies. They are awful. Small, fluffy, big eyes, innocence. I mean I do not understand what all the fuss is about... So obviously I am kidding. Anyone with a pulse loves puppies (unless of course they are a cat person...but I won't go there...). I have been getting lots of inquiries regarding puppy training lately and that is fantastic. I LOVE seeing dog owners be proactive with training before issues arise. Whether you are interested in a high drive working dog or a fami

She know 'paw'? Nope...but check this out...

I saw this video awhile back… I thought…ok that’s pretty badass. I want to train my next shep to do that. Now, I am by no means ‘tactically’ trained like the gentlemen in the video above, but I still think the notion of having a dog with obedience/bitework control paired with a firearm in this manner is pretty slick. Liesel Weapon has therefore been learning the ‘Stealth’ command. Essentially it is a modified attention heel between my legs. To illustrate her progress see be

Liesel Weapon WEEK 6: Working dog in training

Liesel Weapon : WEEK 6 of the Top Tier K9 working dog puppy imprinting program. Distance, duration and distractions were added this week as Liesel continues to improve on her obedience, nosework, tracking and bitework. She has also started seeing more of the world as a trail running, atv riding, river swimming GSD! This dog is fearless... #dogtraining #dogtrainingmissoulamontana #germanshepherd #workingdog #workingdogintraining #missoulamontanadogtrainer

The Run Your Pack Wilderness Immersion Package

Run Your Pack is excited to announce our new ‘Wilderness Immersion’ board and train package. What does this mean for your dog? Well, in a nutshell, it means that you, the human, may just be jealous about where your dog gets to stay while they are being trained… Set back in a secluded setting in the mountains of western Montana: your dog will get 1 on 1 training and care while they run in the woods, drink from a fresh mountain creek and sleep right in the trainer’s home: a pea

    Origin of the Orange Bandana

Schuck Handsome has donned the orange bandana since he was about 1. Prior to having his iconic blaze, we often ran into trouble around town. We would be happily walking along enjoying a warm Missoula afternoon when a SHRIEK/GASP/SCREECHING TIRE would interrupt our placid walkabout. The cause of this disruption was/is always an overzealous pretentious dog owner that MUST be heard...From here I would have some variation of the following conversation: I will use 'Uppity Lady W
