RYP ROLL CALL : March/April Bunch

RYP ROLL CALL : March/April Bunch Had a wonderful bunch in the past few weeks! As the winter weather returns this crew has done send home lessons. Now, it’s up to handlers to start transitioning skills to their home context. In 3 weeks these dogs and their handlers will return for another lesson to discuss how things have gone and how to best progress forward as a team. That’s our process here at RYP: train the dog - train the handler - give the team a training plan moving fo

Out of Towner Kicks Off Training

Meet K9 Harley! Not only did she kick off her 3 week foundational obedience board and train yesterday...but she also wins the award for longest distance traveled to get to RYP🥇 This kelpie cross (with the help of her humans of course) made a 13 hour drive from North Dakota for training. Dog training requires proper dedication and commitment...but to make that drive, in winter. My hats off to Harley’s humans! This cute little working dog is already blossoming with structure,

Cane Corso Max Kicks Off His Training Program

Cane Corso Max kicking off his board and train program this week! Max was another puppy imprinting student who is back for on leash obedience (70 pounds heavier and quite a bit taller). This magnificent breed is formidable in looks and genetically designed to be defensive and guard their people and home. Owning this breed (or any guard breed) can be incredibly fun and rewarding but requires dedication. It’s imperative that training creates confidence and stability so the dog

    More Confident Chloe

K9 Chloe kicks off her board and train program this week! This sweet natured lab husky x had some anxiety in new situations involving people. After a few days of getting into a training rhythm here at RYP she has blossomed with confidence and excitement! Her first handler lesson with her owners is tonight! Looking forward to passing on the skills and patterns to Chloe’s humans! #gooddog #dogtraining #runyourpack

K9 Millie Kicks Off Board and Train

K9 Millie kicks off her training program. This King shepherd was a puppy imprinting rockstar. She just kicked off her 3 week board and train and is doing great building off the skills learned during her puppy program! #germanshepherd #kingshepherd #runyourpack #dogtraining

K9 Aida Kicks Off Training Program

K9 Aida kicks off her training program this week! This nifty little GSD has tons of drive. Her owner did a fantastic job of laying a great training/working baseline. Our main objective with her is to tighten up and simplify her understanding of positions on and off leash. With all dogs, particularly drivey ones, simplicity and clarity in communication is key...frustration/confusion can create a dog that electively listens and self rewards on opportunities that more more clearl

Proof That RYP Trains Little Dogs Too!

Sometimes we get asked if we only train shepherds...we do get a lot of wonderful shepherd clients in: BUT we actually train all breeds big and small. To drive that point home meet Boo a 5 year old shitzu in from Butte Montana starting his 3 week board and train this week. He is a sharp little pup that is learning the art of leash work very quickly! #dogtraining #missoula #runyourpack #shitzu

K9 Henry Back at RYP for Off Leash Training

Henry is a young English Springer Spaniel that rocked his on leash board and train program last spring. He’s now back to continue his learning and transition his on leash skills off leash! Part of Henry‘s learning includes the skill of running on a treadmill! Great activity to allow his body and brain to burn off some steam and get in a good calm mindset to learn! #dogtraining #missoula #englishspringerspaniel

RYP ROLL CALL Some new faces around the prop this week kicking off their obedience/rehabilitation programs. If this steady cold and snow continues I may be training ALL of them to collect firewood and pull a dogsled... ZOEY (Shepherd X): Zoey made the trip down from Kalispell for her foundational obedience program. As you can tell from her 'blue steel' focus look she digs the work and is rapidly excelling with her skills. BASIL (Hound X): Big boy Basil is starting his foundat

A Barking Shepherd at 4am = a Buffoon In His Underwear with a Loaded Gun

I have lived with Shepherds pretty much my whole life. I just love their style. They are easy to train, loyal and they come equipped with a built in security system. I have spent many nights sleeping soundly in the backcountry with my dogs knowing that if I NEEDED to be awake - they would sound the alarm. At 4am on June 29th 2017 that particular security system was tested... June 29th, 2017 was an important day for a lot of reasons. It was my wife's birthday. It was also her

Work Your Dog : But don't take yourself too seriously...

I once heard a dog's drive broken down very simply by Ken Licklider of Von Liche Kennels...He said 'Dogs live for 4 things: Air, Food, Water, and Sex...and you better be making love to your dog every day.' (this is a polite version - the live version had more expletives. Anyone that has heard Ken speak understands what I am talking about...) This statement was made before he encouraged a group of stoic police K9 officers to stand up and make baby sounds and get animated in an

RUFF - FUR - ALL Program!

RYP is excited to announce the new RUFF - FUR - ALL program...(that's "referral" for those that don't speak pun). Here is how it works: If you complete a RYP foundational stay-and-train immersion obedience program (typically 2-4 weeks...see more about that program here) and later tell a friend...then THEY book a foundational stay-and-train immersion obedience program...then YOU get a FREE private lesson! Whoa a FREE lesson!? What can I do with that? Well... Wanna brush up on

    NEW FACILITY and LOCATION!

NEW TRAINING DIGS! RYP is excited to announce our new location and training facility! We needed room to expand so we jumped across the valley and over the river landing in a beautiful location that boasts a temperature controlled facility, fenced in acreage and a 'backyard' that includes miles of prime Montana backcountry...a lovely stage for working K9s... Tomorrow the doors officially open and the roster is stacked with a full house of K9s in for different levels of trainin

    Sit. Stay. Save my ass.

It’s past midnight in a torrential downpour. We were alone somewhere above 12,000 feet in the backcountry of Colorado. I was soaked, scared, freezing and lost…That’s when Schuck Handsome saved my ass… Anyone that has ventured into a conversation with me about dogs and training knows that I hold a canine’s perceptive ability to a high regard. Arrogance often leaves humans wondering ‘why that dog cannot learn…’ when the truth is, more often than not, that we are just failing to

    Sharpening the Weapon

Liesel Weapon is a sleeve biting, man tracking, scent detecting, obedience rocking, badass little German Shepherd. She (and I) literally eat, breathe and sleep training (she actually has yet to eat food out of a bowl…it all comes from training). Now 6 months old, this 36 pound lean, mean (but actually really nice) fur missile is well on her way to becoming a 'super dog'. Thursday Oct 13th we are embarking on a journey. For 2 weeks we will be trading the mountains of Western M

Liesel Weapon : WEEK 6 of the Top Tier K9 working dog puppy imprinting program. Distance, duration and distractions were added this week as Liesel continues to improve on her obedience, nosework, tracking and bitework. She has also started seeing more of the world as a trail running, atv riding, river swimming GSD! This dog is fearless... #dogtraining #dogtrainingmissoulamontana #germanshepherd #workingdog #workingdogintraining #missoulamontanadogtrainer

The Run Your Pack Wilderness Immersion Package

Run Your Pack is excited to announce our new ‘Wilderness Immersion’ board and train package. What does this mean for your dog? Well, in a nutshell, it means that you, the human, may just be jealous about where your dog gets to stay while they are being trained… Set back in a secluded setting in the mountains of western Montana: your dog will get 1 on 1 training and care while they run in the woods, drink from a fresh mountain creek and sleep right in the trainer’s home: a pea
